We’re already doing personalization (But is it scalable and automated?)

By Larissa Komen

You think you’re doing personalisation because emails start with “Dear [First name]” and have dynamic fields. Until you realise every journey still depends on someone pressing “send”.

Personalisation often looks like this: two customers receive different offers, with different products and different messaging.

But all defined in advance, and nothing changes based on what they do next.

That is where it breaks.

Because personalisation is often treated as an output, not as a system.
Teams optimise emails, add variations and improve campaigns.
But every decision still needs to be set up manually.

When everything depends on manual setup, two things happen:

  • It does not scale.
  • And you start optimising for what is easy to measure: more clicks and more redemptions.

Often driven by discounts. Not because it creates value, but because it creates response.

If you want to move beyond that, the shift is simple.

Start by defining which customer behaviour creates value. Not engagement. Not clicks. But something concrete:

  • A second purchase.
  • Higher frequency.
  • Better margin.

Then build your logic around that. Not per campaign, but as a rule that runs every time.

We tested this with a client: same deals, same audience. One group relied on manual scheduling. The other let the system decide which deal to show, based on behaviour.

The difference was clear.

  • Transactions increased by 5%.
  • Sales grew by 6.6%.

But more importantly:

  • 60% less manual setup.
  • Less operational work.
  • More relevant decisions per customer.

That is when personalisation changes. Not something you prepare… but something that adapts.

And it usually starts with a simple question: What do you actually want your customers to do next?
