You have more data than ever. So why does decision-making still feel reactive?

By Larissa Komen

You invested thousands in dashboards, attribution, and reporting. Beautiful graphs that perfectly explain why you missed your targets yesterday.

When sales fell behind at a client in QSR, the reflex was always the same: “We need to do something. Fast.” They pushed a strong deal. An email was sent out. Sales spiked for a few days. And the problem was buried. Until the next crisis.

The issue isn’t a lack of data. It’s a lack of foresight. Dashboards and reports are designed to explain the past, not to steer the future. True expertise lies in shifting your logic from reporting results to anticipating patterns.

We help clients move beyond reactive marketing by analysing three forward-looking signals:

  1. Churn prediction: identifying segments whose behaviour indicates they are about to drop off.
  2. Margin protection: pinpointing where incentives can be optimised without unnecessary discounting.
  3. Incentive matching: delivering specific, relevant actions to the right individual at the right moment.

We recently applied this with that same QSR client. Instead of waiting for performance to dip and reacting with another offer, we intervened earlier, based on these leading indicators, before the curve bent.

The results:

  • Less margin erosion: avoiding unnecessary discounts for everyone.
  • More proactive interventions: moving from last-minute panic to a structured approach.
  • Higher relevance: matching actions to specific customer behaviours.

That is the shift: moving from explaining what happened to estimating the impact of what is about to happen. Because even a 70% view of the future is more valuable than a 100% accurate explanation of a missed target.
