McDonald’s Spain

How ValueTrack accelerated app adoption into customer value

Setting the Scene

In 2023, McDonald’s Spain launched a new mobile app, creating a major opportunity to deepen customer engagement. A strong wave of downloads was expected from both existing guests migrating into the new app and new users exploring the brand for the first time. But adoption alone was never the real goal. The challenge was turning early app activity into repeat transactions, stronger habits, and long-term customer value. At the same time, customer moments, campaigns, and offers were active but fragmented. ValueTrack helped address that gap by turning disconnected interactions into a coordinated lifecycle strategy designed to accelerate growth from the first 30 days onward.

We began by analysing customer, order, and engagement data to understand which behaviours were linked to value and where momentum was being lost. ValueTrack helped structure that process by turning raw data into actionable lifecycle insights, value stages, and KPI frameworks. We mapped the customer journey to identify friction points, missed moments, and stages where users were most likely to stall. Then we connected those insights to the campaign calendar and broader activation plan. What became clear was that activity was not the issue; orchestration was. Campaigns performed well individually, but they were not consistently helping customers build habits, progress, and grow in value.

The turning point came when we used the ValueTrack framework to define the lifecycle more clearly and align teams around the moments that mattered most. Rather than treating CRM, campaigns, and customer growth as separate workstreams, we created one shared model for how value should be built over time. Lifecycle stages such as Early Engagement, Activation, Growth, and Win-back gave the business a practical structure for guiding customers forward. That made it easier to connect business goals, customer behaviour, and channel decisions. The result was a clearer operating model that linked strategic priorities to measurable actions across the full customer journey.

ValueTrack helped accelerate execution by turning strategy into live, measurable lifecycle activation. Journeys were orchestrated across app, email, push, and in-store touchpoints, with messaging and offers tailored to each lifecycle stage. New users were guided into early engagement journeys designed to build habits and reduce drop-off. As customers progressed, activation and growth tactics supported repeat behaviour and higher value over time. ValueTrack’s always-on measurement approach, including dashboards, Test & Learn, and feedback loops, helped teams continuously improve what was live. Just as importantly, it worked on top of the existing stack, allowing execution to scale without adding new platforms or operational complexity.

The challenge was not only to design a stronger lifecycle strategy, but to make it work in a complex operating environment with multiple stakeholders, channels, and delivery partners. More sophistication meant more need for governance, alignment, and shared accountability. To keep strategy and execution connected, we introduced clear ways of working, stronger documentation, shared KPI ownership, and regular alignment across teams. Because operational delivery sat partly with another agency, consistency became even more important. ValueTrack helped solve that by creating one lifecycle roadmap, one performance view, and one structured system that kept everyone focused on the same growth goals.

The outcome was more than a lifecycle program. McDonald’s Spain gained a clearer and more scalable way to move customers from first interaction to repeat value. ValueTrack helped accelerate that journey by shortening time-to-value, reducing stalled customer moments, and creating a stronger link between lifecycle strategy and day-to-day execution. It gave teams a better overview of where value was built, where friction remained, and how performance could keep improving over time. Most importantly, it created a durable foundation for future lifecycle, personalization, and value-growth initiatives, turning app momentum into a system for long-term customer growth.
